For Bird Watching Enthusiasts

Latest Bird Sightings

September 6 / 2008 - Last year there were quite a few towhee's bouncing around the yard. It seemed like every time I turned around there was another one rustling, scratching and turning over dead leaves in search of food. This summer seems to have brought a far smaller number of towhee's, predominantly males. Up until today, I don't remember seeing a single female towhee, although I'm sure they were probably around.

Yesterday I was taking some photos off the camera and mixed in with some juvenile cardinal photos was  this shot. I don't remember seeing the bird swoop into the viewfinder, and I know it was mixed into the middle of the cardinal shots, but sure enough - a female towhee.

Bird Migrations

September 1 / 2008 - A lot of local people are reporting the ruby throated hummingbirds in our area have started their southern migration down to South America. I'm still seeing quite a few females on the feeder and the remaining flowers, although it has been a couple of weeks since I noticed any males in the yard. It could well be the females I've been seeing are migratory birds stopping in for a bite to eat on their way south.
