Bird Identification

| Personal experience has
taught me one of the most difficult tasks for a
backyard birder is identifying what birds are
visiting the yard and feeders. I'm certainly no
expert and have incorrectly identified more than
my fair share of birds. It's pretty hard to go
wrong with blue jays, cardinals, and mourning
doves, but when you get into the finch and
sparrow families where so many of them can look
almost identical, the identification process can
become far more difficult. There are a lot of
wonderful books on the market that can help with
identification. The problem is that no single
book ever covers all the species and
possibilities. If you're having trouble
identifying one of your backyard birds or
critters, send me a photo and I'll be glad to
see if I can help you come up with a proper
identification. It's a win-win situation. I get
to see your photos of the bird, and with a
little bit of luck, you get the answer to what
bird has paid you a visit - and it doesn't cost
you anything but the time to send the e-mail. |

| I've been a tole painter
for - well - longer than I care to remember. In
addition to tole painting, I'm a packrat by
nature and have hundreds of items tucked away in
the basement and sheds that make ideal painting
surfaces. Almost all of us have items hanging
around the house we might like to have a bird or
critter picture painted on and add it to our
backyard landscape. While I do have painting
projects and plans available for sale on this
site, I realize that many of you may not have
the time, interest, or ability to actually
complete your own projects. If you fall into any
of those categories but would like to have a
custom designed picture created and painted on

| There is no doubt there
are more bird related products on the market
today than at any time in history. Some of what
is available is simply amazingly creative and
very well made while other items are shoddy and
just plain junk. Either way, there are times
when you have one of those "I wish I could make
..." moments when you come up with an idea for
an item that would be ideal in your birdscape
but it simply isn't available commercially. When
you have one of those 'moments', feel free to
jot down your idea, be it a custom birdhouse,
feeder, painting surface or anything else that
