The stump was part of an old cherry
tree that stood in the way of snow plowing and telephone
wires. We placed one of the smaller pieces upright near the
main photo taking window. To start the fun we set sunflower
seeds on top We can often snap birds and critters that would
normally be reluctant to come this close without the seeds.
Some of this crowd are only summer visitors: gray catbird,
brown-headed cowbird, rose-breasted grosbeak, chipping
sparrow, red-winged blackbird and the eastern chipmunk.
The year-round birds and critters will usually pose any time
of the year: with new spring leaves and rain; hiding behind
overgrown leaves of summer; with fallen leaves and dying
branches; and on the ice and snow of winter. A small
sampling of these would be: blue jay, American goldfinch,
black-capped chickadee, hairy woodpecker, tufted titmouse,
white-breasted nuthatch, downy woodpecker, northern
cardinal, northern flicker, house finch, and the critters,
gray and red squirrels.
