Turkey Vulture - (Cathartes aura)
|
|
October 11, 2010 - While spending time
outdoors on this beautiful fall day, we noticed
what we assumed were hawks soaring in the sky
over neighboring fields on the warm air
currents, looking for their next meal. By the
time the group arrived over our backyard at
least ten birds were swooping and gliding.
Having a dark silhouette against a bright sky, I
hoped the camera could sort out a proper
identification. I focused mostly on individuals
rather than large group shots, hoping for
clearer pictures. It did occur to me that
multiple hunting was not something our
sharp-shinned hawks seemed to do. After poring
over the final photographs and finding a good
source for silhouettes of birds of prey, we
realized we had witnessed the hunt of turkey
vultures. While I have seen these birds on local
roadsides, I regret never stopping to actually
capture pictures of these beauty challenged
creatures. I will now next chance I get. |
